Program Overview

CDE2000 - Creating Narratives

Description

Creating Narratives is an interdisciplinary course which aims to explore the principles of communication in Design and Engineering. The purpose of the course is to make explicit to students how they can draw on visual and verbal resources to clearly articulate the valued knowledge in their disciplines to both specialist and non-specialist audiences in a succinct manner. Students will explore a range of narratives around multimodal artefacts such as posters, renderings, drawings, models and exhibits from these disciplines to become familiar with the ways to engage, inform, critique and persuade different audiences and communicate their designs effectively.

Objectives

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Critique of a range of communication artefacts.
  2. Organise a message effectively in written and oral mode.
  3. Unpack the technicality of their discipline and its purpose.
  4. Use a range of presentation skills such as voice and non-verbal strategies.
  5. Select specific language strategies to engage, inform, critique and evaluate
  6. Adjust language register to the purpose of the communication, and to the audience.
  7. Select and organise apt visual elements to represent information and convey them effectively
  8. Understand how verbal and visual modes interact and apply multimodal principles of communication
  9. Craft strong and appropriate narratives by connecting with their audience using an appropriate visual communication strategy.
  10. Develop understanding and skills in written, spoken and visual communication in the context of Design and Engineering.
  11. Use a range of visual communication strategies such as: typography, composition, signs and symbols, data visualization patterns, illustration, drawing and photographs
  12. Communicate the ideational (the concepts, ideas, topic), the interpersonal (the relation between the text’s producer and the audience; the values) and the textual (the coherence of the message) (Halliday, 1978)
