Program Overview

Exchange Plus Programmes

The 4-year NUS-University of Toronto (U of T) LLB-LLM exchange plus programme is available to students on the four-year LLB programme. Under this arrangement, students will complete three years at NUS and then go to U of T to read a coursework LLM for one year. Upon successful completion of the LLM at U of T, NUS law students will graduate with an LLB (Hons) from NUS and an LLM from U of T.

Overview

The LLM also offers concentrations in the areas of:

  • Business Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Legal Theory
  • Health Law, Ethics and Policy

Curriculum Matters

  • Course Preclusions & Pre-requisites: Students interested in the U of T LLM should not undertake NUS courses that are similar to the LLM programme. Students are responsible to check the LLM course requirements/offerings when registering for NUS electives in Year 3.
  • Credit Transfer: The credits read at U of T towards the LLM will count towards the NUS LLB degree as NUS 40 Units. Courses completed at U of T do not count towards the LLB Class of Honours.

Eligibility & Application

Applications for the programme are open from Friday, 17 October 2025 till Monday, 8 December 2025. Only students in Law 2 qualify to apply. In some years, the programme may also be open to Law 3. Interested students should look out for announcements.

To apply, students must submit:

  • Resume
  • Personal Statement (indicating matric number)
  • Latest Unofficial Transcript
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation provided by Academic Referees

After nomination by the Dean's Office for this programme, students will then be required to submit a formal application, at a later time, for U of T's consideration.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I go for student exchange (SEP) AND the LLB-LLM?: Students must choose either SEP or the LLB-LLM programme. Students in Year 2 may concurrently apply for the SEP and the LLB-LLM but can only go for one programme.
  • What are the selection criteria?: The selection criteria include academic grades, character, and personal statement. In some instances, students may be called for an interview by both faculty and U of T.
  • How much will it cost me?: Students will pay the same amount in tuition fees to U of T as any other LLM student. NUS LLB tuition fees will not be payable for the semesters away at U of T.
  • Will there be scholarships or financial aid available?: Students can apply and compete for scholarships that are available to every other applicant to U of T's LLM. The NUS NASA Degree Scholarship or Bursary may be available for application if students are accepted into the programme.
