Overview
The Second Major in English Language and Linguistics is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the English language and its various aspects. The program is offered by the Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore.
Graduation Requirements for Cohort 2022 Onwards
To graduate with a Second Major in English Language and Linguistics, students must pass at least 40 units of EL or EL-recognised courses, which include:
- EL1101E The Nature of Language
- A minimum of 12 units at level-2000 from the following:
- EL2101 Structure of Sentences and Meanings
- EL2102 Sound Patterns in Language
- EL2111 Historical Variation in English
- EL2151 Social Variation in English
- A minimum of 12 units at level-3000 or higher
- A maximum of 8 units of EL-recognised courses
- CL2280 Basic Translation or TRA2101 Basic Translation
- CL2281 Translation and Interpretation or INT2101 Basic Interpreting
- CL2291 Chinese Anthropolinguistics (in English)
- CL3201 Communicating through Chinese Rhetoric and Metaphors
- CL3207 Chinese Sociolinguistics
- CL3213 Chinese Semantics
- CL3214 Aspects of Chinese Linguistics
- CL3217 The Analysis of Chinese Morphosyntax

- A maximum of 8 units of EL-recognised courses

Graduation Requirements for Cohort 2019 to Cohort 2020
To major in English Language, students need to:
- Pass EL1101E The Nature of Language. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
- Pass at least 36 units of EL or EL-recognised courses which include the following: (1) EL2101 Structure of Sentences and Meanings (2) EL2102 Sound Patterns in Language (3) EL2111 Historical Variation in English (4) EL2151 Social Variation in English (5) A minimum of 16 units at level 3000 or higher. (6) A maximum of 12 units of EL-recognised courses
