Program Overview

Second Major in Innovation & Design: Cohort AY2024/2025

The Second Major in Innovation & Design consists of a series of project-based courses that run throughout a student’s candidature. Students are expected to develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities in innovation and design in a cumulative manner through these courses.

The learning journey begins with lower-level courses that introduce students to basic concepts in innovation and design, and culminates in a major design project and a final year project where students are expected to apply their design knowledge and skills to develop solutions to real problems. Students will also take a number of Innovation & Enterprise electives to widen their knowledge about topics in design, business, and entrepreneurship.

Program Requirements

The requirements of the Second Major in Innovation & Design are as follows:

  • Group A – complete ONE of the following:
    • CDE2300 Product Design and Innovation (4 units)
    • CDE2310 Fundamentals of Systems Design (4 units)
  • Group B – complete ONE of the following:

Additional Information

Students who participate in the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) programmes may map some of their NOC courses to the Second Major. Students may also enrol in a specialisation or a minor on top of their primary major and the Second Major in Innovation & Design. However, those who do so may need to graduate with additional courses above and beyond the minimum 160 units needed for graduation.

This latest update in July 2025 incorporates changes to the CDE curriculum for Cohort AY2024/2025.

Students who missed the Group A and Group B courses in Semester 2 and Semester 3 respectively may clear these courses in a later semester.

Students from Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental & Sustainability Engineering, Infrastructure & Project Management, and Materials Science & Engineering who are planning to take the Group A course CDE2300 may do so in Year 1 Semester 2 after clearing DTK1234 in the preceding semester. Students from College of Humanities and Sciences as well as School of Computing who have read DTK1234 in Year 1 Semester 1 may also read CDE2300 in Year 1 Semester 2.

Students from Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Industrial & Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering who are planning to take the Group A course CDE2300 may do so in Year 2 Semester 1 after clearing DTK1234 in the preceding semester. Students from College of Humanities and Sciences as well as School of Computing who take DTK1234 in Year 1 Semester 2 will also read CDE2300 in Year 2 Semester 1. They may also opt to read the Group B course in Year 1 Semester 1.

Students who are planning to take the Group A course CDE2310 should do so in Year 1 Semester 2 as the course is offered in Semester 2 only of each academic year. They may opt to read the Group B course in Year 1 Semester 1 or Year 2 Semester 1.

Students who are in the Engineering Scholars Programme and poly-intake students in Engineering majors who are exempted from one year’s worth of courses (38 units) may follow a three-year timeline.

CDE3301/CDE3301C cannot be read concurrently with credit-bearing internship.

CDE4301/CDE4301A cannot be read concurrently with credit-bearing internship. CDE4301/CDE4301A cannot be used to fulfil a specialisation in any Engineering major if it also used to fulfil the Second Major in Innovation & Design.

Default is CDE2300. Students who are required to take the introductory course DTK1234 Design Thinking should pass the course before embarking on CDE2300. CDE2310 is targeted at students who intend to work on projects in complex engineering systems. These courses can be double-counted toward the cross-disciplinary course requirement for students from School of Computing. For students from other Faculties/Schools, these courses are counted as unrestricted electives.

Default is CDE2301. CDE2311 is targeted at students who intend to work on satellite-related projects. CDE1301B, CDE1301C, and CDE1301F are reserved only for Year 1 and/or Year 2 students who are selected for the Hornet, DarkNUS, and FSAE training programmes respectively. CDE2605R/CDE2606B can be counted as Group B course only for students from the College of Design and Engineering who are in selected competition projects aside from FSAE, Bumblebee, RoboMaster (e.g. CanSat Competition, Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition, University Rover Challenge). Counted as unrestricted elective except CDE2605R which can be used to partially fulfil the internship requirement for Engineering majors.

Generally counted as unrestricted electives. Some courses may be double-counted between the Second Major and a student’s primary major.

Generally counted as unrestricted elective. This course replaces the design project course in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Science. Students should clear at least one Group A or Group B course prior to CDE3301/CDE3301C. CDE3301C is a variant of CDE3301 that is offered for selected competition projects and can be completed during one of the following windows:

  • Year 2 Semester 1 to Year 2 Semester 2
  • Year 3 Semester 1 to Year 3 Semester 2

Replaces Integrated Project course in the common curriculum for Engineering majors. May replace honours thesis course in some non-Engineering majors (or vice-versa). CDE4301/CDE4301A cannot be used to fulfil a specialisation in any Engineering major if it also used to fulfil the Second Major in Innovation & Design.

Students from Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Industrial & Systems Engineering,
