Department of Chinese Studies

The Department of Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore offers various programs for students.


Second Major

The Department of Chinese Studies offers a second major in Chinese Language and Chinese Studies.


Chinese Studies Second Major (2021 and after)

To graduate with a second major in Chinese Studies, students must complete at least 40 MCs of Chinese Studies modules or Chinese Studies-recognised modules, including:


  1. CH1101E
  2. CH2121
  3. CH2141
  4. CH2161
  5. CL2101
  6. CL3104
  7. CH2162 or CH2221 or CH2243 or CH2252
  8. At least 16 MCs of elective modules at level 3000 or higher (including CL3104)
  9. The total MCs from the following courses can be at most 8: a) Chinese Studies-recognised modules (excluding CL2101 and CL3104) b) Chinese Studies modules taught in English (see note 2)

Chinese Studies Second Major (2019-2020)

To graduate with a second major in Chinese Studies, students must: i) Pass CH1101E, which can be used to satisfy the Faculty Core or Unrestricted Electives requirement. ii) Complete at least 36 MCs of Chinese Studies modules or Chinese Studies-recognised modules, including:


  1. CH2121
  2. CH2141
  3. CH2161
  4. CL2101
  5. CL2104 or CL3104
  6. CH2162 or CH2221 or CH2243 or CH2252
  7. At least 12 MCs of elective modules at level 3000 or higher (excluding CL3104)
  8. The total MCs from the following courses can be at most 9: a) Chinese Studies-recognised modules (excluding CL2101, CL2104, and CL3104) b) Chinese Studies modules taught in English (see note 2)

Chinese Studies Second Major (2016-2018)

To graduate with a second major in Chinese Studies, students must: i) Pass CH1101E, which can be used to satisfy the Faculty Core or Unrestricted Electives requirement. ii) Complete at least 44 MCs of Chinese Studies modules or Chinese Studies-recognised modules, including:

  7. At least 20 MCs of elective modules at level 3000 or higher
