Program Overview


Program Overview

The Master's degree in Chinese Culture and Language is a high-quality, comprehensive course focusing on Chinese literature, history, philosophy, language, and overseas Chinese studies. This program welcomes graduates from related fields and individuals interested in the subject. It also provides opportunities for Chinese language teachers, journalists, and other Chinese language education workers to further their studies.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for this program, applicants must meet the following criteria:


  • Hold a Bachelor's degree with honors (first or second class) from the National University of Singapore's Department of Chinese Studies or a related field, or have completed a four-year course with excellent grades in a relevant field such as Chinese studies, history, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, or economics.
  • Alternatively, applicants with a Bachelor's degree in a related field may be considered if they pass an entrance examination.
  • Other academic qualifications and work experience recognized by the University's Institute of Graduate Studies may also be accepted.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English or whose Bachelor's degree was not taught in English must provide TOEFL or IELTS scores to demonstrate their English proficiency. The scores are valid as long as they are within the application period.


  • TOEFL scores must be at least 237 (computer-based) or 85 (internet-based with a writing score of at least 22).
  • IELTS scores must be at least 6.0.

Application Procedure

Applications for this program are accepted from November 1st of the previous year to January 15th of the current year. The admission results will be announced by May at the latest.


Tuition Fees

  • A deposit of SGD 7,650 (including GST) is required upon acceptance of the offer.
  • The deposit will be used as part of the tuition fees upon enrollment. If the student fails to enroll, the deposit will be forfeited.
  • For students who need to retake a course, an additional fee of SGD 4,295 (including GST) will be charged per course.
  • Students in this program are not eligible for the Service Obligation Scheme under the Singapore Ministry of Education.

Program Structure

The Master's degree in Chinese Culture and Language is a coursework program that requires students to complete a set of elective courses but does not require a dissertation.
