Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine
The Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine is a postgraduate program designed for medical professionals seeking to specialize in emergency medicine. The program consists of three parts: Part A, Part B, and Part C.
Program Overview
The Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) [MMed (Emerg Med)] Part A Examination is a 2-hour paper consisting of 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in Single Best Answer (SBA) format. Candidates who are successful in the examination will be awarded certificates deeming them to have passed the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A awarded by the National University of Singapore and the Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine.
Assessment/Examination
The syllabus follows the Emergency Medicine Core Curriculum used by the Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Singapore. The weightage of the various basic sciences of the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A Examination is approximately as follows:
- Anatomy: 20%
- Biochemistry: 15%
- Genetics & Immunology: 5%
- Microbiology: 10%
- Pathology: 10%
- Pharmacology: 15%
- Physiology: 25%
Award
Candidates who are successful in the examination will be awarded certificates deeming them to have passed the Master of Medicine (Emerg Med) Part A awarded by the National University of Singapore and the Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine.
Intake Date
The intake dates for the program are February/March and August/September of each year.
Admission
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the program, applicants must:
- Hold a recognized basic medical degree by Singapore Medical Council (SMC) or by the candidate's country of employment.
- This examination may be taken in or after the first foundation year of training or its overseas equivalent.
Application
Applicants are required to submit an online application via the Online System for Course Application (OSCA) by the stipulated closing date. A completed application would have fulfilled the following:
- All required fields are accurately filled, and all supporting documents are uploaded into the system.
- The non-refundable application fee payment is successful and supported by Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt), which is downloadable from the system.
The following documents must be uploaded in OSCA by the closing date:
- Recent passport-sized photograph (image has to be 400 by 514 pixels)
- Certified true copy / scanned colored copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):

- NRIC: for locals / Permanent Residents
- Employment Pass and Passport: for foreigners (residing in Singapore)
- Passport: for foreigners (not residing in Singapore)

Fees
Fee Structure
The fee structure for the program is as follows:
- Application Fee: $98.10
- Examination/Programme Fee: $1,032.80
- Payment Mode: PayNow / Credit Card
Notes
- All fees listed are in Singapore Dollars, including the prevailing Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate unless stated otherwise.
- The Application fee is non-refundable and must be paid at the time of application.
- All successful payments will receive a Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt) via a system-generated email.
- Successful applicants will be notified via email to accept placement. Placement will be confirmed only after a successful payment transaction.
- The Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) reserves all rights to review and adjust fees as necessary and accordingly without prior notice.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal Policy
- All withdrawal and refund requests will be subject to 10% administrative charges capped at SGD500.00.
- All requests must be submitted within 14 calendar days from the last day of Examination end date or before the programme commencement date, where applicable.
- Supporting documents must be submitted via email in all cases after submission of the online request.
- The Division will generally consider providing refunds to candidates under the following circumstances:
- Medical – Refund request must be accompanied by a medical certificate.
- Pregnancy – Refund request must be accompanied by a medical report.
- Involvement in an accident, e.g., victim of crime, accident or disaster – Refund request must be supported by evidence such as a medical report and/or police report.
- Compassionate grounds - Bereavement in the immediate family refers to the loss of parent(s), grandparent, sibling, spouse, or child and must be supported by relevant documents such as a death certificate, proof of the relationship, etc.
- Requests for refund under the following reasons will not be considered:
- Lack of preparedness or readiness for the Examination/Programme for which the candidate/student has enrolled.
- Failure to arrange time away from work.
- Inability to secure a visa or other travel documents required to attend the Examination/Programme.
Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine (Part B) Examination
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants with any one of the following Primary Medical Qualification:
- MMed (Emerg Med) Part A (NUS)
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine [FRCEM Primary] (formerly known as Member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MCEM Part A) / Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM Part A); must be taken before the end of 2019.
- Primary examination of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
- Primary examination in Emergency Medicine (PEEM) of the HKCEM

Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine (Part C) Examination
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must pass the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination or HKCEM IEEM Part I.
Application
Applicants are to create an online application by creating an account at the Graduate Admission System (GDA3) and submit the application by the stipulated deadline.
Posting Requirements
The following are the posting requirements for the conferment of MMed (Emerg Med) after passing the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination:
- Candidates must have completed at least 36 months of medical officer/residency postings. Post-internship/housemanship work experience is not recognized.
- All clinical postings must have a continuous duration of at least 2 months to be eligible for the award of MMed (Emerg Med) degree.
- Candidates would only be conferred the MMed (Emerg Med) degree after they have satisfactorily completed the following:
- At least 12 months of training posts in Emergency Medicine.
- At least 6 months of training in Medicine, of which at least 2 months should be in Internal Medicine and the remainder, if any, at least 2 months in one or more of the following: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Renal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine.
- At least 6 months of training posts in Surgery, of which no more than 3 months may be in Anaesthesia. The other surgical postings, each of at least 2 months duration, should be completed in one or more of the following surgical disciplines, namely: Burns and Plastics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Eye, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery or Urology.
- At least 12 months of additional postings in a combination of any of the relevant disciplines, such as Emergency Medicine, Medical postings (e.g., Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Renal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine) and Surgical postings (e.g., Burns and Plastics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Eye, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery or Urology).
Commencement Ceremony
Candidates who passed MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination but pending completion of the required postings must submit their updated posting letter, confirming full completion of required postings to the DGMS by 30th April of each year to be conferred the MMed (Emerg Med) degree and to attend the Commencement Ceremony in the same year. Only postings completed by the 30th April deadline will be counted towards eligibility. All required postings must be completed within 2 years of passing the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination.
