Program Overview

Introduction to the Surgical Technology Program

The NYU Langone Health Surgical Technology Program is designed to prepare qualified individuals to become surgical technologists. The program combines classroom learning with hands-on clinical experience to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to assist surgeons in an operating room setting.

Program Overview

The program aims to prepare entry-level surgical technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. Students will develop a deep understanding of human anatomy and physiology, surgical procedures, and aseptic principles.

Cognitive (Knowledge) Domains

Students will develop a deep understanding of:

  • Human anatomy and physiology relevant to surgical procedures
  • The steps involved in various surgical procedures, including the roles of different surgical instruments and the sterile processing department
  • Aseptic principles and infection control measures used in the operating room

Psychomotor (Skills) Domains

Students will acquire practical skills through hands-on training, including:

  • Identifying and properly using surgical instruments
  • Setting up sterile fields and arranging instruments efficiently
  • Positioning patients appropriately on the operating table

Affective (Behavior) Domains

Students will cultivate essential interpersonal and professional qualities, such as:

  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Ethical conduct and respect for patients, colleagues, and the surgical environment
  • Stress management and maintaining composure in high-pressure situations

Program Structure

The program is divided into two six-month sessions. The first six months are devoted to classroom study in the basic sciences, principles of aseptic technique, and fundamentals of operating room techniques. The latter portion of this session introduces students to common basic surgical procedures. Students are evaluated on a daily basis.

The second six months of the program are spent in the operating room, where students develop practical experience. Each student will rotate through various surgical services, and a written exam is given at the completion of each service. Students are also evaluated on their clinical performance daily.

Admission Requirements

Prospective applicants to the program must meet specific criteria, including:

  • Associate's degree
  • Minimum of one-year work experience
  • Good physical and mental health
  • Strong communication skills

Career Opportunities

The certified surgical technologist can seek employment in the operating room, delivery room, cardiac catheterization lab, or surgery center; in central service; or as a private scrub for a surgeon.

Program Accreditation

The Surgical Technology Program is accredited by both the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Program Faculty

The program is led by:

  • Lenworth Trail, CST, CSPDT, MSHA, Program Director
  • Peter Rodney, RN, MSN, Vice President of Perioperative Services, Co-Program Administrator
