Introduction to the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway

The Three-Year MD Directed Pathway at NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers early access to faculty mentors, opportunities to conduct research, and direct progression into one of the residency programs, pending successful completion of medical school training. This program is the first of its kind at a nationally ranked academic medical center.

Program Overview

The Three-Year MD Directed Pathway provides students with the opportunity to complete their MD curriculum in less time and gain a head start on their specialization. This program stands out by offering early, conditional residency acceptance into any one of 21 NYU Langone Health residency programs, providing accelerated entry into a variety of medical specialties.

A Flexible, Fast-track MD Curriculum

The average time it takes to enter the workforce has lengthened as more aspiring physicians pursue specialty training as part of their medical education. The Three-Year MD Directed Pathway allows students to complete their MD curriculum in less time and gain a head start on their specialization.

Entry Options

There are four options for entering the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway:

  • Prospective students can apply to the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway when they apply to the MD program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
  • Those who have earned a PhD from another college or university can apply to the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway for specialized, research-focused residency programs.
  • Matriculated students in the MD program can opt in to the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway during their first year of training or halfway through the clerkship year.
  • Matriculated students in the MD/PhD program can apply to the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway after the completion of their PhD.

Program Structure

The basic elements of the Three-Year MD Directed Pathway are nearly identical to those of the three-year MD curriculum. However, students spend their 6-week summer research opportunity between years one and two doing a project in the department of their intended residency. This gives them a chance to get to know people in the department and meet potential mentors who can assist them throughout their time in medical school.

Early Residency Acceptance

The Three-Year MD Directed Pathway offers an early conditional acceptance into any one of 21 NYU Langone Health residency programs. Students pre-matriculate in July of stage one and opt-in to the directed pathway in February of stage two.

Consortium of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs

NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a founding member of the Consortium of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs, a group of North American medical schools offering the three-year MD, many of which focus on primary care training.
