The MS in Environmental Health Sciences is a specialized program offered by the Division of Environmental Medicine at NYU Langone. This program provides students with the skills and expertise needed to work in jobs related to environmental health. Students have the option of enrolling full- or part-time.
Program Overview
The expansion of regulations in occupational safety and health and environmental protection provides increased career opportunities for people trained in various aspects of environmental health sciences. The MS program provides graduate training relevant to jobs involving worker health and safety, health hazard communication, health risk assessment and policy, and environmental analysis of toxicants, including the related areas of administration and technical sales.
Career Opportunities
The program prepares students to work in academia, industry, consulting firms, trade associations, and local, state, and federal governmental agencies. It can also equip secondary school teachers to introduce environmental science into their school's curriculum or into existing science courses.
Curriculum
The program trains students to use modern scientific methodologies to solve real-world environmental problems. It teaches the fundamentals of environmental pollution, toxicology, and biostatistics, as well as practical skills such as how to present scientific data and how to properly interpret scientific reports. The program is individualized to the needs and interests of each student, allowing them to take relevant courses in other schools within NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science, such as environmental management and planning, environmental law, risk assessment, and environmental impact assessment.
MS Admissions Requirements
Applicants to the MS program in Environmental Health Sciences are generally expected to have a bachelor's degree in a scientific field such as biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related discipline. Exceptions to this may be made on an individual basis depending on the selected course of study.
MS Degree Requirements
Graduate students follow NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science degree requirements for the MS in Environmental Health Sciences. In addition to coursework, MS students are required to attend divisional seminars and journal clubs. Laboratory placements may be arranged in consultation with the student's academic advisor.
