What You'll Learn

The NYU Teacher Residency prepares students for the realities of the classroom with rigorous coursework, hands-on practice, and culturally responsive teaching. Students have the opportunity to build deep knowledge of how to serve all students, including emergent bilinguals and students with disabilities, in their content area.

Academic Experience

The design of the curriculum aligns with what students are doing in the classroom. Students experience one module at a time while learning with close support from their teacher mentor and gradually increasing their classroom responsibilities.

Careers and Outcomes

The Teacher Residency is a middle and high school teacher preparation program. The coursework and fieldwork lead to eligibility for an initial teaching certification in New York State. Depending on the content area, students will graduate ready to take on a role in:

  • Secondary school English education, Grades 7–12
  • Secondary school mathematics education, Grades 7–12
  • Secondary school science education, Grades 7–12
  • Secondary school social studies education, Grades 7–12
  • Secondary school special education generalist, Grades 7–12

Graduates have obtained positions with various school districts, including the New York City Department of Education, New York City charter schools, and school districts in California, Florida, and Washington, D.C.

Program Structure

The program includes participation in a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project, which students co-design with their students. This project provides an opportunity to foster a collaborative relationship with the student community, one of the most important skills students can learn in their role as educators.

Support and Resources

As a teacher resident, students have support from NYU Steinhardt faculty, a cohort of peers, a teaching mentor, a residency director, and residency site school leadership. Students meet online with faculty and peers twice per week in the evening using interactive tools.
