General Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn

The General Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn is a five-year clinical program that begins on July 1 of each year. The residency, offered through the Department of Surgery, combines training sites that are a rich and varied source of surgical patients, medical conditions, and care settings.

Program Overview

  • The residency is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and prepares trainees for certification by the American Board of Surgery.
  • After graduation, residents routinely match in competitive fellowship programs in all subspecialties and in their top fellowship program choices.
  • The program provides a wealth of clinical and operative experience, along with a variety of clinical and basic science research opportunities.

Training and Education

  • Residents train at three major hospitals: NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYU Langone's Tisch Hospital, and NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue.
  • The program offers progressive responsibility, with surgical decision-making and duties taught in clinical and didactic settings.
  • Residents actively participate in patient care and supervise junior residents and medical students.
  • With each year of training, residents have the opportunity to develop professionally and are exposed to general surgery practice across multiple specialties.

Specialties and Rotations

  • The program includes surgery of the breast, abdominal wall, vascular system, thoracic pathologies, skin and soft tissue, gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary tract, and endocrine system.
  • Residents have dedicated rotations on pediatric and transplant surgery and receive experience in critical care, trauma, and emergency surgery, among other areas.
  • During the trauma rotation, residents work at the Level 1 Trauma Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn as part of an integrated team of specialists caring for patients who have multiple injuries.

  • The program is led by:
    • Akuezunkpa O. Ude Welcome, MD, Chief of Surgery, Department of Surgery
    • Jason D. Prescott, MD, Program Director, General Surgery Residency
    • Franchesca J. Hwang, MD, Associate Program Director, General Surgery Residency

  • The department endeavors to evolve as a model for primary and tertiary patient care, integrating inpatient, ambulatory, and emergency services.
  • The faculty provide surgical residents with a progressively graded curriculum of study and clinical experience under guidance and supervision.
  • Residents acquire a broad understanding of human biology as it relates to disorders of a surgical nature and the technical knowledge and skills necessary to manage patients with surgical conditions.
