Program Overview
Introduction to the Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship
The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at NYU Langone’s Division of Neuromuscular Medicine is an American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited one-year program. This fellowship provides comprehensive training in an intellectually stimulating environment, where inquiry is encouraged and clinical skills are expertly honed. Fellows gain expertise in diagnosing and treating disorders of peripheral nerve, muscle, neuromuscular junction, and anterior horn cell.
Program Overview
Under the direction of the program director, fellows become adept at the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for adults and children. The large neuromuscular faculty provides training in various specialties, including:
- Genetic diagnostics and therapeutics
- Neuromuscular ultrasound
- Immunological treatments
- Nerve, muscle, and skin neuropathology
- Rehabilitation
Training also includes extensive clinical exposure to neuromuscular clinical patient care and to a broad range of electrodiagnostic techniques, including electromyography (EMG) in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
Clinical Experience
Fellows rotate through a weekly multidisciplinary neuromuscular Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) clinic, which includes robust adult and pediatric clinical exposure with support from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. A weekly neuromuscular continuity clinic rotation allows fellows to have primary responsibility for decision-making and care coordination, under faculty supervision, where cases range from common to unusual presentations.
Program Structure
Incoming fellows begin the program in July on the first day of the academic calendar year. Before orientation, materials are made available to assist with scheduling medical record system training. A full day of orientation is provided to ensure understanding of rotation-related procedures and expectations. This is followed by an educational Peripheral Neuroanatomy Boot Camp series, which takes place over the course of several lectures in the first month, during which time fellows are excused from clinical obligations.
Educational Resources
All fellows are provided access to an extensive electronic PDF library of selected neuromuscular and neurophysiology-related articles that is available on a shared network drive. This library is an excellent resource, and fellows are highly encouraged to read the literature throughout the academic year. In addition, orientation materials featuring general policy and procedures are all located online for convenience.
Certification and Examination
At the end of the fellowship, graduates meet requirements to take certification examinations, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology exam in neuromuscular medicine and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine exam in electrodiagnostic medicine.
Conferences, Didactics, and Research
Neuromuscular fellows attend regularly scheduled didactic, clinical case, and journal club conferences, with a broad range of topics covered across the year. Under attending physician supervision, scheduled conferences include:
- Weekly neurophysiology didactic course, focusing on basic and advanced EMG technique and various neuromuscular disorders
- Monthly neuropathology conference
- Monthly Journal Club
- Monthly neuromuscular clinical and pathology conference
- Neurology departmental conferences
- Weekly Neurology Grand Rounds
- Weekly Pediatric Neurology Grand Rounds
- Quarterly neurology department morbidity mortality conference
An annual American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) in-service examination for both neuromuscular medicine and electrodiagnostic medicine is administered. Before the examination, fellows have a full day dedicated review session prepared by faculty.
Research Opportunities
Under faculty mentorship, fellows are encouraged to participate in quality improvement and research projects. These activities may be conducted in collaboration with other fellows and trainees. Funding is provided to attend a national meeting.
