Program Overview

Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency

The Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Health is a five-year program that prepares trainees to function independently as outstanding qualified vascular and endovascular surgeons. The program is designed to provide a comprehensive training experience, with a focus on progressive independence and graduated responsibility.

Program Overview

The program is pursued after medical school and is designed to prepare trainees to pass the examinations required to achieve board certification in vascular surgery. The first three years of the program are spent in the General Surgery Residency in Manhattan, with six months of each year dedicated to core general surgery rotations and six months dedicated to vascular surgery rotations. The final two years of the program are dedicated entirely to vascular and endovascular surgery rotations.

Clinical Training Sites

Residents in the program rotate at three inpatient sites: NYU Langone's Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. Each site provides a unique and comprehensive training experience, with exposure to a diverse range of vascular surgery cases.

Kimmel Pavilion

Kimmel Pavilion is a large, technologically advanced tertiary care center with eight hybrid, open, and endovascular operating suites. Residents gain experience in supervising the vascular surgery service, participating in and performing both routine and complex vascular surgery and endovascular procedures, and directly overseeing general surgical residents, medical students, and nurse practitioners.

Bellevue

Bellevue is a major public hospital in New York City's NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation, providing vascular surgical care to a diverse urban population. Residents encounter broad and in-depth experience in vascular trauma and caring for a population notable for its socioeconomics, languages spoken, and geographic origin.

Manhattan Campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System

This site provides vascular surgical care to veterans and is the referral center for advanced vascular surgical care of several nearby Veterans Health Administration hospitals. Senior vascular residents participate in all aspects of vascular surgical care for a patient population with often advanced and complex levels of disease.

Clinical Experience and Training

The program provides clinical and didactic learning in both the inpatient and outpatient areas, covering the entire breadth of vascular and endovascular surgery. Residents receive training in the following areas:

  • Carotid Artery and Cerebrovascular Disease
  • Aortic Aneurysm
  • Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease
  • Venous Disease
  • Diabetes-Related Complications
  • Mesenteric Vascular Conditions
  • Angioaccess for Hemodialysis
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Vascular Trauma
  • Rare Vascular Conditions

Didactic Teaching and Conferences

Residents' academic education is enhanced by the pursuit of research projects and independent reading and investigation. The Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Weekly Conference takes place on Tuesday mornings, and additional didactic teaching conferences and resources include:

  • Department of General Surgery morbidity and mortality (M&M) conference
  • Vascular Surgery Journal Club
  • Wound Healing Center interdisciplinary conference
  • Aortic Disease Center interdisciplinary conference
  • General surgery teaching and didactic conferences
  • Weekly vascular surgery teaching rounds
  • DeckerMed's Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Weekly Curriculum

Research Opportunities

The division maintains active research programs in both clinical and basic science areas, with faculty deeply involved in scholarly activity. Trainees are expected to participate in research projects during their tenure at NYU Langone, with support provided for grant writing, statistical analysis, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposals.

Case Volume

The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery performs a high volume of procedures each year, including:

  • 1,000 major vascular surgical procedures at Kimmel Pavilion
  • 450 major outpatient percutaneous arterial and venous interventions
  • 1,100 outpatient interventions for varicose veins and venous insufficiency
  • An additional 1,000 vascular procedures performed at Bellevue and the Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System

Additional Resources

The program offers additional clinical resources and rotations, including:

  • Outpatient vascular intervention center
  • Academic outpatient Vein Center
  • Intersocietal Accreditation Commission-accredited noninvasive vascular laboratory
  • New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM)
  • Outpatient clinics at all three inpatient training sites

Conclusion

The Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Health provides a comprehensive and rigorous training experience, preparing trainees to function independently as outstanding qualified vascular and endovascular surgeons. With a focus on progressive independence and graduated responsibility, the program offers a unique and comprehensive training experience, with exposure to a diverse range of vascular surgery cases and opportunities for research and academic growth.
