Program Overview

Introduction to the Addiction Medicine Fellowship

The Addiction Medicine Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a one-year program offered through the Division of General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation and the Department of Population Health. The primary goal of this fellowship is to train a new generation of clinical leaders, educators, and researchers dedicated to improving the lives and health of underserved populations disproportionately affected by drug and alcohol use disorders.

Program Overview

Founded in 2011, the Addiction Medicine Fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is currently supported by a five-year T25 training grant from the U.S. Health Services and Resources Administration. The fellowship is conducted in collaboration with the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine (ACAAM). Upon completion of the program, fellows are eligible to take the American Board of Preventive Medicine's Addiction Medicine Certification Exam.

Clinical Training

Clinical training takes place across NYU Langone, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur, and Sunset Terrace Family Health Center at NYU Langone. This includes experiences at multiple primary care–based addiction medicine practices, a busy inpatient addiction consult service, and exposure to licensed addiction and opioid treatment programs. Fellows learn alongside those in the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship during weekly didactic seminars, journal clubs, and conferences.

Fellowship Rotations

The fellowship includes rotations at various clinics focusing on addiction medicine, primary care, patients experiencing homelessness, and post-incarceration transition. These rotations include:

  • Primary Care Addiction Medicine Clinic: Provides outpatient addiction services, including tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse treatment and support.
  • Portal for Reentry and Transition: An ambulatory care outpatient clinic serving people recently released from New York City jails and other area correctional facilities.
  • Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals and Addiction Consultation Service: An inpatient addiction consultation program providing addiction treatment for patients with substance use disorders.
  • Complex Care Clinic: A walk-in clinic using a primary care and social work model to improve care and outcomes among high-risk and high-need homeless and unstably-housed patients.
  • Opioid Treatment Program: Provides medication-assisted treatment for adults with opioid use disorder.
  • Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program: A licensed drug and alcohol adult outpatient treatment program emphasizing cognitive behavioral and group therapy, dual-diagnosis psychopharmacology, and opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder medication management.

Research Opportunities

All fellows are expected to develop and participate in mentored research, a quality improvement project, or a scholarly project under the mentorship of addiction medicine faculty. Clinical research experiences are available through NYU Grossman School of Medicine training programs, including the MS in Clinical Investigation and the Population Health Science Scholars Program.
