Program Overview

Headache Medicine Fellowship

The Division of Headache offers a one-year United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS)–accredited headache medicine fellowship program for neurologists who have completed their Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) residency requirements. Our program is one of roughly 40 headache medicine fellowships in the United States. Fellows get to make full use of the multidisciplinary offerings at NYU Langone that are essential to the management of complex headache disorders.

Core Faculty

Our core faculty includes:

  • Sarah M Bobker, MD, fellowship director for the division
  • Mia T. Minen, MD, MPH, director of research for the division
  • Valeriya Levitan, MD
  • Robert Fryer, MD, PhD, director of the division and pediatric and adolescent headache specialist

Program Description

Fellows receive both clinical and didactic training in the basic science, diagnosis, and management of primary and secondary headache disorders and facial pains. Fellows gain experience in procedural skills, such as chemodenervation, trigger point injections, and various types of peripheral nerve blocks. Fellows also gain an understanding of outpatient intravenous infusion therapies.

Further, fellows are offered the opportunity to explore complementary medicine approaches, such as biofeedback and acupuncture. Fellows study electives in pain medicine, orofacial pain, and a choice of other areas of professional interest (included but not limited to concussion, otoneurology, and neuro-opthalmology). One administrative day each week is devoted to clinical research or self-study.

Research Opportunities

Research opportunities include participation in any active research trials in the Division of Headache or new and independent research projects. The Division of Headache holds bimonthly meetings to review case presentations and research studies, as well as to host journal clubs. Fellows are responsible for presentations at journal club meetings.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible for our program, applicants must have successfully completed three years of ACGME-approved neurology residency training in the United States. Although not required at the time of application, fellows must obtain an active New York State medical license prior to starting the fellowship.

Our program follows the fellowship application timeline set forth by the American Headache Society and American Academy of Neurology.

Eligible applicants should submit the following:

  • updated curriculum vitae
  • three letters of recommendation (including one from the residency program director)
  • personal statement

Certification

Following the successful completion of this year of training, fellows are eligible for subspecialty certification in headache medicine through the UCNS.
