Pediatric Rheumatology Education

The Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at NYU Langone provides educational opportunities for medical students and residents who wish to gain clinical skills in pediatric rheumatology.

Program Description

Medical students and residents can choose to enroll in the pediatric rheumatology elective offered year-round. During this four-week program, students participate in office hours and inpatient consultations, and help provide care at outpatient clinics. Training occurs in several locations: Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.

The program includes weekly conferences, journal club, and grand rounds, as well as joint seminars with the Division of Rheumatology, part of NYU Langone’s Department of Medicine. Students learn how to diagnose pediatric rheumatic diseases, including dermatomyositis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Kawasaki disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Requirements

• Students must complete the core pediatrics clerkship before enrolling.
• The care of the child with chronic illness selective is for medical students only.
• During this selective, they learn about general medical principles in the treatment of children with chronic illnesses, as well as how to work effectively with families and professionals involved in children’s care.

Training Opportunities

• Pediatric sports medicine and physiatry residents at NYU Grossman School of Medicine also participate in training, rotating through the pediatric rheumatology clinic at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital.
