Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Psychiatry Residency
Program Overview
Introduction to the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Psychiatry Residency
The Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Adult Psychiatry Residency is a program that provides excellent, broad-based training in psychiatry with a focus on care delivery for diverse populations and underserved communities. The program is situated within the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, one of the oldest Federally Qualified Health Centers in the nation, and shares an academic affiliation with NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Program Overview
The residency consists of hands-on clinical rotations and a comprehensive didactic education. The program is uniquely focused on community-based care within the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, where PGY-1 residents rotate for outpatient medicine, then return in PGY-2 year to complete 12 weeks of rotations within behavioral health services. In the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, clinical education is entirely centered in the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, including primary care sites and standalone behavioral health clinic, with opportunities to treat patients within the New York City public school system and homeless shelters.
Clinical Rotations
- Clinical rotations in New York City public schools, primary care offices, and shelters for homeless individuals
- Robust clinical opportunities in psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, early intervention for psychosis, substance use disorders, and child psychiatry—all through the outpatient clinic in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
- Rotations in emergency, inpatient forensic, and inpatient child psychiatry at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue
- Protected scholarly activity time from postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) through PGY-4
- Access to world-renowned faculty who educate, supervise, and mentor residents
Shared Didactic Education
Residents participate in shared, seminar-style didactics with NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Psychiatry Residency. Didactics occur on Thursdays throughout the year, and time for didactic education is protected when residents are on psychiatry, elective, and neurology rotations. The didactic program is rich and varied, drawing on the expertise of faculty from across the NYU Langone Health system and its affiliated institutions.
Scholarly Activity
Residents benefit from protected time for scholarly activity, which begins in PGY-1 during psychiatry and elective rotation time and continues throughout the four years of training. During this time, residents identify areas of interest, develop foundational knowledge, identify mentorship, and carry out projects. These projects may involve translational research, quality improvement, healthcare advocacy, or advanced work in education or program implementation.
Application Process
The program accepts three applicants each year. All applications for the residency are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which requires the following materials:
- A CV
- A personal statement
- A dean’s letter
- An official medical school transcript
- Three letters of recommendation
International medical graduates must also submit the following documents:
- A valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate
- U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores, Steps 1 and 2, no minimum score requirement
