Program Overview


Introduction to the Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Sports Medicine Fellowship at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation is a one-year program designed to provide fellows with a multidisciplinary education in sports medicine and sports medicine rehabilitation. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and aims to produce outstanding clinicians who serve the diverse patient population of New York City.


Program Mission

The mission of the program is to provide a trifold mission of patient care, medical education, and clinical research. As an integral part of NYU Langone Health and NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the program is committed to excellence in all aspects of sports medicine.


Sports Medicine Training

Fellows receive individualized training from sports medicine specialists in both rehabilitation medicine and orthopedic surgery, gaining hands-on experience on the sidelines, in the operating room, and in the office. The program includes:


  • Participation in a journal club
  • Attendance at interactive sports medicine educational conferences
  • Teaching sports medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound skills to residents
  • Conducting weekly sports medicine board reviews
  • Participating in the sports education lecture series of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency

Elective Opportunities

Fellows have the opportunity to participate in elective programs, including:


  • Performing arts medicine at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
  • Exercise physiology at the Sports Performance Center
  • Nonsurgical procedures, such as fluoroscopy-guided spine injections, joint injections, and electrodiagnostic procedures

Scholarly Activity

Fellows must complete a scholarly or quality improvement project, which includes:


  • Peer-reviewed funding and research
  • Publication of original research or review articles
  • A presentation at a local, regional, or national professional or scientific society meeting

Fellowship Application Process and Prerequisites

The program accepts one fellow per year. Applicants must:


  • Submit applications using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
  • Register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
  • Complete an ACGME-accredited residency program in physical medicine and rehabilitation before the start of the fellowship year
  • Participate in an on-site interview if invited
