Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship

The Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation offers advanced practice in brain injury rehabilitation medicine. The one-year fellowship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Program Overview

Fellows receive brain injury medicine training in the inpatient units at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, Tisch Hospital, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. They also receive outpatient services training at both NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street and Bellevue.

As a fellow, participants gain firsthand experience in the interdisciplinary focus of brain injury rehabilitation. They participate in clinical services that include:

  • Consultation
  • Interdisciplinary rehabilitation therapy
  • Neurology
  • Neuro-optometry
  • Neuropsychology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Psychiatry
  • Spasticity management

During the year, fellows teach residents and medical students, participate in a journal club, organize a chapter review series, attend board-relevant brain injury lectures, and engage in other academic pursuits. They may also attend conferences for various organizations, including:

  • American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R)
  • American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM)
  • Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP)
  • Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIA-NYS)
  • International Brain Injury Association (IBIA)
  • North American Brain Injury Society (NABIS)

Research Opportunities

Research opportunities are available, particularly due to the ongoing innovation of technology in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency. The program fosters a culture of curiosity and scholarship, and faculty and other specialists are eager to assist fellows in their research efforts.

Mission Statement

The program’s mission is to produce outstanding clinicians who serve the diverse patient population of New York City. As an integral part of NYU Langone Health and NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the program is committed to a trifold mission of patient care, medical education, and clinical research.

Fellowship Application Process and Prerequisites

The program accepts one fellow per year. Applicants must submit applications using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Applicants must complete an ACGME-accredited residency program in neurology, psychiatry, or physical medicine and rehabilitation before the start of the fellowship year. The program begins to accept applications for the 2025–26 academic year in summer 2025, with a deadline to submit completed applications for consideration of August 15, 2025.

Top applicants are invited to an on-site interview, which is required for consideration for admission to the program.
