Program Overview


Program Overview

The MA program in Bilingual Education for Teachers prepares teachers to use bilingual approaches with their students in various areas, including early childhood education, childhood education, middle childhood education, adolescence education, special subjects, literacy education, career education, and technical education. This program leads to New York State certification in bilingual education and is open only to applicants already holding teacher certification in a primary area (except in TESOL or World Language Education) in New York State or another US state.


Program Description

The program focuses on developing expertise in theories, concepts, and critical issues in bilingual education. It covers topics such as bilingual multicultural education, intercultural perspectives in multicultural education, bilingual exceptional children, teaching second language theory and practice, and structure of American English.

Admission to the program requires the following minimum components:

The program follows the policies of the Department of Teaching and Learning, NYU Policies, and Steinhardt Academic Policies. These policies include:


  • Policy on Academic Progress: Students are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 for satisfactory academic progress.
  • Pass/Fail Grading Option: MA and Advanced Certificate students are not permitted to take required courses Pass/Fail, but may take elective courses Pass/Fail with program approval.
