Program Overview

Orthopedic Oncology Fellowship

The University of Iowa Orthopedic Oncology Fellowship is a Musculoskeletal Tumor Society recognized fellowship designed to train orthopedic surgeons in underserved areas of the world in the clinical management of musculoskeletal tumors of the pelvis and extremities.

About the Program

Fellows will be exposed to all aspects of the care of patients with benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, including clinical evaluation, surgical decision-making, reconstructive techniques, and perioperative management. Emphasis will be placed on the multidisciplinary aspects of orthopedic oncology, such as participation in tumor boards, radiographic and pathologic diagnostic features, and the indications for systemic treatment and adjuvant radiation.

The purpose of this fellowship is to provide an opportunity for interested surgeons practicing, or intending to practice, in countries with a need for specialized care in the surgical management of sarcoma to gain expertise in orthopedic oncology.

Qualifications

Interested individuals should have the following qualifications:

  • Completed or will complete orthopedic residency prior to the start of the fellowship
  • Fluent in English
  • Plan to return to country of origin to improve orthopedic oncologic care

Program Structure

This is a one-year clinical fellowship in which the fellow will become an integral member of the team. Fellows will be expected to evaluate patients in clinic, assist in operations, and educate residents and medical students. Fellows will be encouraged to participate in a clinical research project during their fellowship year.

Fellows will attend the annual meetings of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Application Process

Applicants will be asked to supply documentation indicating a medical degree, completion of orthopedic residency, two letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae, and a personal statement. The personal statement should be a maximum of 500 words and include how this orthopedic oncology training would be used to improve the lives of sarcoma patients.

Applications will be reviewed each fall, and invitations for virtual interviews will be sent in the winter each year.
