About Program
Program Overview
Overview of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is the recommended degree for advanced practice, preparing nurses to assume the role of nurse practitioner or nurse executive.
Program Details
- The DNP program requires proof of licensure at the time of application.
- Most courses are offered online, but some require on-site attendance.
- Clinical practicums are arranged by the College of Nursing, considering students' locations to minimize long distances.
- While work experience is helpful, it is not necessary for application.
- New graduates can gain experience before classes begin and during the first year of graduate work.
Doctor of Nursing Project
- The project provides an opportunity for in-depth analysis and synthesis of a chosen topic contributing to advanced nursing practice.
- The project is completed over three semesters with assistance from an advisor and faculty members.
Admission Criteria
- The GRE is not required for the DNP program.
- International students are not eligible for F-1 or J-1 student immigration status due to the level of internet-based coursework.
Clinical Courses
- Clinicals must be done in Iowa, with placements made by the College of Nursing.
- Three sequential clinical courses start in the fall and go through summer, requiring 180 or 270 hours of clinical experience each.
- The time commitment for clinical courses can be determined by dividing the number of clinical hours by the number of weeks in each semester.
Attire for Clinicals
- Business casual attire is recommended for clinical settings.
- Lab coats can be worn but are not required.
- A photo badge identifying the student as a DNP student must be worn at all times.
Work and Study
- Students can work while in the DNP program, but the amount of work should be realistic considering the time required for courses and clinical practicums.
- Most students find it difficult to maintain a regular work schedule during the clinical year.
Residency and Tuition
- Moving to Iowa solely for being a student results in non-resident tuition.
- The University of Iowa Registrar’s Office can assist in determining eligibility for resident tuition.
