Program Overview

The University of Iowa offers a Bachelor of Arts in English Education, which includes courses in multicultural young adult literature, culturally-sustaining pedagogy, dialogic discussions, reading, and the importance of meaning-making and constructing reading identities. The program also covers the processes of writing and writing for various audiences and purposes, and language and linguistic variation.

Teacher Education

The Teacher Education Program provides diverse experiences with supportive mentors to effectively prepare students for their future classroom. The program includes classroom experiences and mentorship.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the English Education program, students must:

• Be admitted to the University of Iowa
• Complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of earned college credit before submitting their application
• Documented completion of 10-hour Pre-admission School Field Experience
• Provide transcripts from all colleges attended with evidence of courses taken and grades earned
• Submit two recommendations
• Write an essay (no more than 500 words) on why they want to be a teacher and specifically in the particular program area
• Provide a resume (doc, docx, pdf) of paid and/or volunteer work experience
• Have a cumulative grade-point average considered and reviewed on an individual basis

To submit an application, students must create an account on the TK20 application portal and follow the provided directions. The application process involves:

• Submitting the application
• Receiving a notification from the Office of Student Services regarding the status of the application
