Program Overview


Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Mathematics Education program is designed for individuals holding a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in mathematics who wish to become teachers but have no prior coursework in education. This program features advanced work in mathematics, along with the courses required for teacher certification, which candidates receive upon graduation.


Program Requirements

  • Completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of earned college credit before submitting the application.
  • Documented completion of a 10-hour Pre-admission School Field Experience.
  • Transcripts from all colleges attended with evidence of courses taken and grades earned.
  • Two recommendations.
  • An essay (no more than 500 words) on the topic of why one wants to be a teacher, specifically in the particular program area.
  • A resume (including paid and/or volunteer work experience).
  • A cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 on all post-secondary courses or on at least 12 semester hours of graduate courses is required for graduate admission.

Admission Criteria

  • Admission to the University of Iowa Graduate College.
  • Completion of specific prerequisites (some areas have additional prerequisites).
  • Graduate applicants with grade-point averages below 3.00 will be considered by program faculty, who may elect to petition the Graduate College to admit applicants who demonstrate exceptional promise for graduate study and teaching.

Application Process

  • Complete the application and click “Save” if necessary.
  • When the application is complete, click the “SUBMIT” button.
  • Admission decisions are sent by email approximately one month following the application deadline.
