The Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program offered by University of Iowa Health Care is a two-year accredited program that provides comprehensive training in diagnostic, management, and genetic counseling services for patients and families with genetic disorders and birth defects.
Program Details
- The program accepts 1 resident per year.
- The primary location is the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.
- The program includes a biochemical rotation at the Mayo Clinic Biochemical Genetics Laboratory in Rochester, MN.
- There are 8 clinical and 3 lab faculty members.
- The program is associated with a top national laboratory.
Training and Education
Trainees will acquire an understanding of basic genetic principles and familiarity with all major subdisciplines of the field, including:
- A detailed knowledge of the basic science of genetics and genetic diseases in humans.
- Familiarity with tests used in the evaluation of genetic disorders.
- The ability to apply this knowledge to the evaluation of patients suspected to have a genetic disease.
Clinical Experience
Trainees will have an active inpatient consultation service at University of Iowa Hospitals, as well as patients requiring outpatient genetic services through general genetics clinics and specialty clinics, including:
- Tuberous Sclerosis Complex
- Metabolic Genetics
- Connective Tissue Disorder
- Neurofibromatosis
- Cancer Predisposition
- Undiagnosed Disease Program
- Craniofacial Disorders
- Lysosomal Storage Disorders
Research Opportunities
The University of Iowa is a leader in medical genetics research, with one of the country's top clinical laboratories, the Shivanand R. Patil Cytogenetics & Molecular Laboratory. Trainees will have opportunities to participate in research projects and collaborate with faculty members.
