Program Overview

Admissions and Application

Students interested in the Social Studies Education program typically apply to the College of Education during the second semester of their sophomore year. Admission requirements include:


  • Admission to the University of Iowa
  • Completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of earned college credit before submitting the application
  • Documented completion of a 10-hour Pre-admission School Field Experience
  • Transcripts from all colleges attended with evidence of courses taken and grades earned
  • Two recommendations
  • An essay (no more than 500 words) on the topic: "Please describe on a personal and professional level why you want to be a teacher, and specifically in the particular program area to which you are applying."
  • A resume (doc, docx, pdf) of paid and/or volunteer work experience, including jobs, employers, and dates of employment
  • 9 s.h. in content-area courses with a minimum GPA of 3.00, as follows:
    • 3 s.h. coursework with prefix HIST
    • 6 s.h. of additional coursework with prefixes ANTH, ECON, GEOG, HIST, POLI, PSY, or SOC
