Graduate Program: Creative Writing, Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)

The M.F.A. degree program in Creative Writing requires 36 credit hours of graduate work. The program balances courses in literature with writing workshops (30 hours), and requires a creative thesis (six hours). It offers concentrations in fiction and in poetry.

Program Requirements

• Core Requirements:
  • Poetry or Fiction concentration must complete the following:
    • ENGL688: Poetry Workshop (12 credits)
    • Four English Literature Courses (12 credits)
    • Humanities elective (3 credits)
    • ENGL799: Master's Thesis Research (6 credits)
• Concentration Options:
  • Select one of the following:
    • Poetry concentration:
      • ENGL788: Studies in Poetic Form
    • Fiction concentration:
      • ENGL789: Form and Theory in Fiction
• Total Credits: 36
