English Language and Literature, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Program Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English Language and Literature is a comprehensive program designed to foster advanced scholarship and research in the field. The program requires a minimum of 30 credits of coursework for students entering without an M.A. and 24 credits for those with an M.A.


Advance to Candidacy

To advance to candidacy, students must pass a qualifying examination in their areas of specialization and demonstrate competence in a second language related to their areas of specialization. During the semester students take their qualifying exam, they must enroll in a section of ENGL 898 Pre-Candidacy Research with their advisor to receive guidance in preparing for the exam.


Post-Candidacy

After advancing to candidacy, students must complete at least 12 credits of ENGL 899 Doctoral Dissertation Research and successfully defend and submit an original dissertation.

The program includes the following core requirements:


  • ENGL 601: Introduction to Graduate Studies (3 credits)
  • ENGL 611: Approaches to College Composition (3 credits)
  • A professional development or writing-focused course (choose one):
    • ENGL 888: Practicum in English Studies
    • ENGL 809: Academic Publishing Workshop
  • Select 8 additional courses (24 credits)
  • ENGL 898: Pre-Candidacy Research (3 credits)
  • Reading knowledge of one language other than English
  • ENGL 899: Doctoral Dissertation Research (12 credits)
