Program Overview


Fire Protection Engineering, Master of Science (M.S.)

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in Fire Protection Engineering requires a research thesis and completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours of approved courses. Individual coursework plans are determined by the student, his or her advisor, and the department. The M.S. research thesis should make a contribution to the advancement in the state-of-the-art of fire safety science and/or engineering.


Program Requirements

  • Thesis only: 30 credits
  • The department also offers a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree, which requires 30 credit hours of approved courses in major and minor core areas. The M.Eng. degree does not include a research thesis.

Students with a B.S. in UMD's FPE Program

  • Course List:
    • Master's Thesis Research: 6 credits
      • ENFP799: Master's Thesis Research
    • Additional requirements: 24 credits
      • Complete at least two core courses chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
      • Complete one course in mathematics chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
      • Complete three courses at the 600+ level, chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
      • Complete two courses at the 400+ level, chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
    • Total Credits: 30

Students without a B.S. in UMD's FPE Program

  • Course List:
    • Master's Thesis Research: 6 credits
      • ENFP799: Master's Thesis Research
    • Required course: 3 credits
      • ENFP651: Advanced Fire Dynamics
    • Additional requirements: 21 credits
      • Complete at least two core courses chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
      • Complete one course in mathematics chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
      • Complete four courses at the 600+ level, chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director
    • Total Credits: 30
