Program Overview

Church Music and Worship Program

The gift of music is vital to any worshipping community. In the Church Music and Worship Program, we bring biblical, theological, and historical studies into our analysis and leading of worship in church contexts.

Through a specialization or minor in the CMW program, you will:

• Deepen your knowledge of music styles and forms that shape worship today.
• Broaden your vision of how music around the world enhances the praise of the people of God.
• Develop your spiritual connection to music.
• Be equipped to be a lifelong leader in your own church context.

• The Christian Hymn
• Worship Practicum (0.25 units; part of the Worship Apprentice Program)
• Chapel Choir Ensemble (0.25 units)

Programs

Students registered in regular or degree programs may register for the minor. Students in non-degree or post-degree studies may be admitted to the diploma.

Requirements are identical for both the minor and diploma:

• Complete eight term courses from the required course list,
• Cumulative average of at least 65%.

Scholarship Opportunity

The Ford-Harrison Church Music Award is available to students enrolled in one of the Church Music and Worship academic plans to offset expenses related to tuition fees or enrichment activities in the area of church music and worship.

Minor

Students enrolled in honours or four-year general major academic plans in Arts, or in honours plans in other faculties, may elect to pursue a minor or option in Church Music and Worship. Students must complete eight courses from the required course list, with a cumulative average of at least 65%. Courses should be chosen in consultation with the Program Director in the Department of Music.

Students should note that no more than five courses can be double-counted with their major.

Diploma

This program is for full or part-time students who wish to explore issues of church music but who are not necessarily seeking a university degree or who already hold such a degree. Students must choose five courses from the required course list. For the diploma to be granted, the cumulative average in these courses must be at least 65%.

Church Music and Worship Specialization

The Church Music and Worship specialization is open to students who are enrolled in the Honours Music academic plan. Admission to the Honours Music - Church Music and Worship specialization is by consent of the Program Director upon completion of the first year of studies.
