Introduction to the Master of Actuarial Science Program

The Master of Actuarial Science (MActSc) is an elite professional program with a cutting-edge curriculum and world-class instructors. Designed for individuals with a quantitative background and little-to-no experience in actuarial science, the MActSc program will prepare you for a career as an actuary.

Program Overview

We are the only program in North America accredited by both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). We have also been designated as a Centre of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries (SOA).

What is Actuarial Science?

Actuarial Science is the mathematics of measuring and managing risks associated with uncertain future outcomes. An actuary's job is to minimize risk and design mitigation strategies by using statistics, probability, finance, and risk theory to build predictive models and analyze financial impacts.

Why Actuarial Science?

The role of an actuary can be very rewarding. Actuaries have a social responsibility to provide security for people’s financial lives. They can influence government policy and behavior and ensure the ethical use of data. In addition, actuaries are on the front lines of climate change risk management, ensuring a stable future for the next generation.

Career Prospects

A career as an actuary provides job stability. Both the Government of Canada and the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics are predicting an increase in the demand for actuaries throughout the next decade. Actuaries are also well-compensated. Experienced fellows have the potential to earn $150,000 to $250,000 annually, and many actuaries earn more than that.

As the only North American program accredited by both the CIA and IFoA, our program opens doors for students to work around the world. In addition, the exam exemptions received by completing our program can substantially reduce the travel time to becoming an accredited actuary.

Program Structure

• The program consists of 15 courses.
• Students complete an industry project in their third term, providing a hands-on learning experience and a chance to see what being an actuary is like in the real world.
• We facilitate site visits with local companies so that students can meet with potential employers prior to graduating.
• Our program also provides plenty of networking opportunities with our Advisory Board members from Canada Life, Deloitte, Equitable Life, Fairfax Financial, Foresters, Manulife, Moody’s Analytics, Munich Re, Securian, Sun Life, and Willis Towers Watson.

Admission Requirements

• The deadline to apply for admission is January 6.
• Students that successfully complete our program are eligible for credits towards the IFoA, CIA, SOA, and CAS exams.

Job Placement

• 100% of students in the 2022 cohort found employment in 3 months or less.

Accreditation Pathways

• Our program provides exam credits from 4 actuarial organizations.
