Program Overview


Information Technology Management Degree

The Information Technology Management degree at the University of Waterloo is designed to bridge the gap between business leaders and IT systems. This program combines systems analysis, databases, e-business, networks, and management information systems with marketing, project management, and business statistics.


Overview

Graduates of this program will receive a Bachelor of Mathematics degree and gain the skills to work as business or technical consultants, systems analysts, database administrators, or web programmers. The program is available as a co-op or regular program, offering students the opportunity to gain up to two years of paid work experience.


What Courses Will You Take in Information Technology Management?

The program consists of a mix of Computer Science and Mathematics courses, along with electives. In the first year, students will take courses such as:


  • MATH 135 – Algebra for Honours Mathematics
  • MATH 137 – Calculus 1 for Honours Mathematics
  • Choose one course from:
    • CS 115 – Introduction to Computer Science 1
    • CS 135 – Designing Functional Programs
  • One communication skills course
  • One elective

In the upper years, students will take courses in computer science and math, along with business and economics courses. Some sample upper-year courses include:


  • COMM 431 – Project Management
  • COMM 432 – Electronic Business
  • CS 338 – Computer Applications in Business: Databases

Customize Your Degree

Students can add additional areas of expertise by including one of the minors available to all Waterloo students. Some popular choices include a minor in statistics, a minor in Human Resources, and a diploma in Society, Technology and Values.


Co-op Program

The co-op program offers students the opportunity to gain up to two years of paid work experience. Students will normally alternate between school and work every four months, integrating their classroom learning with real-world experience. Some sample co-op job titles include:

Admission Requirements

Ontario students must have six Grade 12 U and/or M courses, including:


  • Advanced Functions
  • Calculus and Vectors
  • Any Grade 12 U English
  • One other 4U course
  • Grade 11 Introduction to Computer Science is recommended

Admission averages are individual selection from the mid-80s.


How to Apply

Students can apply to Mathematics or Mathematics/Business Administration and choose Information Technology Management as their major at the end of first year. There are supplementary information forms, including the Admission Information Form, which are required for admission.
