Program Overview
MSc Kinesiology and Health Sciences
The MSc Kinesiology and Health Sciences program is a thesis-based master's program that aims to advance knowledge in human health and movement sciences. The program fosters a unique interdisciplinary research approach, with course work and research focused in three fields: Biomechanics, Neuroscience, or Physiology and Nutrition.
Program Overview
The program provides the opportunity to understand cellular to societal implications of physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle, preparing students for careers in a wide range of health fields. As a MSc graduate, students will be well-prepared to carry on with doctoral studies, proceed to professional health programs, or take higher standing positions in the private sector.
Format
- Research-based, on campus
- Full-time: 6 terms (2 years)
- Part-time: 12 terms (4 years)
- Master's thesis
Research Fields
The study of kinesiology spans the breadth of cellular, biophysical, and psycho-social parameters that affect and effect movement in the realm of sport, work, exercise, and disease. Applicants to the master or doctoral program apply to study in one of three areas: biomechanics, neuroscience, or physiology and nutrition. Within these areas, there is a strong emphasis on aging, injury and disease prevention, health promotion, and rehabilitation.
Find a Supervisor
A supervisor must be secured before an applicant is eligible to receive an offer of admission. Applicants are encouraged to review the research interests of each faculty member and contact the individual faculty member to communicate their interest and confirm whether they are accepting new students to supervise.
Collaborative Aeronautics Program
The Collaborative Aeronautics Program (CAP) is an entirely new approach to Master’s and Doctoral studies in aeronautics. Graduate students apply directly to the MSc Kinesiology and Health Sciences program and select the Aeronautics admission option. While completing their degree requirements in their home unit, they also complete aeronautical training alongside CAP students from other fields.
Admission Requirements
- Guaranteed funding packages may not be able to cover all tuition and living expenses incurred during a graduate program, and students are encouraged to understand more about the cost of completing their graduate program before applying.
- International students are encouraged to apply, but the Faculty of Health at the University of Waterloo can only accept a small proportion of these students.
Application Deadline
- February 1 (for admission in September)
- Contact department for admission in January and May
Graduate Student Resources
- Kinesiology Graduate Student Association
- Awards and funding
- Graduate Student Housing
Degree Requirements
The program requires students to acquire sufficient knowledge to pursue research at a superior level, develop a facility with quantitative methods, and obtain an understanding of the components that together make up the multidisciplinary study of kinesiology. The specific degree requirements are outlined in the program's curriculum.
