Program Overview

Master of Health Informatics Program

The Master of Health Informatics (MHI) program is a course-based curriculum that requires students to complete the following:

• Seven core courses
• Two electives
• One 12-16 week (420 hours) practicum course (HLTH 640)

Program Structure

The MHI degree can be completed within two years for full-time students who take three courses per term (three terms per year). Part-time students take one course per term and must complete their degree within four years of initial program entry. Students who wish to increase their course load must change their status from part-time to full-time. All graduate students must maintain continuous registration for each term of the program.

  • HLTH 613 - IT for health professionals
  • HLTH 649 Ethics and Privacy Considerations for Digital Technology and AI in Health (6 week modular course – Nov. and Dec.- fall term, worth 0.25 credits)
• Term Two (Winter):
  • HLTH 611 - The health care system
• Term Three (Spring):
  • CS 634 - Security and privacy in health systems

Year Two

• Term Four (Fall):
  • HLTH 615 - Requirements specification and analysis in health systems
• Term Five (Winter):
  • CS 792 - Data structures and standards
• Term Six (Spring):
  • Elective one

Year Three

• Term Seven (Fall):
  • CS 638 - Principles of data management and use or HLTH 605B - Quantitative Methods and Analysis
• Term Eight (Winter):
  • HLTH 637 - Public health informatics
• Term Nine (Spring):
  • HLTH 640 - Professional experience practicum

• Winter:
  • HLTH 650A Application of Artificial Intelligence in Health (6 week modular course worth 0.25 credits)
  • HLTH 650B Machine Learning Techniques in Health (6 week modular course worth 0.25 credits)
  • Any HLTH course with approval from program lead or academic advisor
• Spring:
  • HLTH 661 - Geographic information systems and public health
  • HLTH 718A Advanced Artificial Intelligence in Health I (6 week modular course worth 0.25 credits)
  • HLTH 718B Natural Language Processing Algorithm and Application in Health (6 week modular course worth 0.25 credits)
  • Any HLTH course with approval from program lead or academic advisor
