Program Overview

Honours Science Program

The Honours Science program at the University of Waterloo is designed to provide students with a flexible and interdisciplinary approach to studying science. This program allows students to explore various fields of science, including biology, chemistry, earth sciences, materials and nanosciences, physics, and more.

Program Overview

As an Honours Science student, you can choose between a range of science subjects to count towards your elective credits. The program encourages students to consider their goals and interests when selecting courses, whether it be meeting the requirements for professional school, taking specific upper-year courses, or exploring courses for interest.

Courses

The program offers a wide range of courses, including:

  • Biology (BIOL)
  • Chemistry (CHEM)
  • Earth Sciences (EARTH)
  • Materials and Nanosciences (MNS)
  • Physics (PHYS)
  • Science (SCI)

Students can use the visual course maps, available for five Science subjects of study, to plan their course sequence and align it with their goals.

Degree Requirements

Program requirements are generally based on the year students begin their studies in the Faculty of Science. Students can review their program requirements in the archived calendar for the appropriate year and use their Unofficial Transcript in Quest to see the courses they have taken and grades earned.

Minors

The Honours Science program allows students to complement their degree with a Science or non-Science minor. Students can explore various minors available across all faculties.

Further Education

The program provides resources and support for students interested in pursuing professional or graduate school. Students can explore various types of further education, including:

  • Centre for Career Development
  • School of Optometry
  • School of Pharmacy
  • Undergraduate planning

Course Sequences

The program offers suggested course sequences for students interested in pursuing specific pathways, including:

  • Pathway to UW Pharmacy from Honours Science
  • Pathway to UW Optometry from Honours Science

These course sequences are designed to meet the academic requirements for application to the respective programs.

Experiential Learning

The EDGE program provides students with experiential learning opportunities, allowing them to gain practical experience and skills in their field of study.

Program Details

The Honours Science program is a non-co-op program, and students can expect to complete their degree in four years. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in science, as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen career.
