Program Overview

English Language and Literature Program

The English Language and Literature program offers a comprehensive foundation in English literature, allowing students to pursue their literary interests and passions. The program is one of four majors offered by the department.

Degree Options

The program offers several degree options:

  • Four-year honours degree
  • Four-year general degree
  • Three-year general degree

Four-year Honours Degree

The Four-year honours degree in Literature provides students with a number of options, depending on their interests and goals:

  • Regular or co-op mode
  • Stand-alone or joint honours degree
  • Part of an Honours Arts and Business degree
  • Combination with specializations in creative writing, digital media studies, global literatures, communication design, or technical writing

To be enrolled in an Honours English degree, students must maintain an average of 70% in their English courses and a 60% overall average.

Four-year General Degree

If a student's average does not meet the requirements for an honours degree, they can still continue in their program by pursuing a four-year general degree in Literature. Students in the four-year general degree have access to all the same courses as honours students, but do not participate in co-op or graduate with a specialization.

Three-year General Degree

The Literature program can also be taken as a three-year general degree.

Program Details

The Literature degree provides students with a comprehensive foundation in English literature, allowing them to explore literatures from around the world, including British, postcolonial, Canadian, and American. Students will study a broad variety of texts, from Renaissance drama to fantasy and science fiction, from poetry to graphic narratives.

Upon graduation, students will be prepared for further study in fields like law or education, for graduate study, or for a variety of careers in areas such as government, business, industry, or art—any career that values excellent communication and analytical skills.
