Course Overview
The present social and economic context has impacted the functioning and adaptability of professional organisations. The complexity and volatility of environmental change has generated a serious concern about behavioral and emotional competencies of senior and top leaders regarding “how to cope up with the challenges of sustainable profitable growth, health and wellbeing”. Leaders’ decision making has become too abrupt and chaotic at personal and professional level. Mental disorders, suicides, divorces, anxiety, fears, sleeplessness are raising questions about the psychological wellbeing of working executives and their ability to cope up with work or non-work-related stress. Current observations indicates that executives are earning well but there is a loss of happiness, life satisfaction, harmonious relationship and a culture of mutual trust and support at the work places. Negative emotions (anxiety, fear, frustration, work pressure, jealousy and hatred) are becoming new normal in organisational behavior.
Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
- Understanding the role of cognitive, affective and conative processes at the work place.
- Understanding the role of personality, values, leadership styles, and culture in the development of emotional intelligence.
- Knowledge about the impact of emotional intelligence on employees’ motivational processes.
- Understanding the biological (the role of brain) and sociological perspectives (role modeling) on the development of EI.
- Understanding the relevance of cross cultural and spiritual perspectives on emotional intelligence.
Skills
- To learn how self-management and relationship management (interpersonal) skills lead to superior performance.
- To learn about the importance of managing emotions in improving one’s ability for logical thinking and problem solving.
- How nasty emotions can be harm one’s psychological health and wellbeing.
Assessment
- Assessing the critical role of emotional and social competencies to resolve conflicts, to drive innovation and to lead effective change management.
- Assessing one’s ability to manage difficult relationships at work place and effectively work with others in the team.

Requirements for Taking the Exam
- In order to participate in the exam, there is an 80 % attendance requirement.
- In addition, students must complete the following compulsory, non-graded activities:
- Activity 1: Individual Presentations of 1-2 articles and cases. At least two powerpoint presentations thoughout the course by every student.
- Activity 2: Project work - students are expected to write either a conceptual paper or empirical paper - or a case study or a bookreview on a theme related to leadership and emotional intelligence.
- Activity 3: 4 Hours take home exam: the length ca be app 26.400 characters (including spaces ) which corresponds to 10-11 pages.
