Program Overview


Master of Engineering in Bioengineering

The Bioengineering MEng is a full-time program, starting each Fall and completed in two semesters. Bioengineering does not offer part-time, late-start or remote options for the MEng.


Program Requirements

The Bioengineering MEng Degree requires a minimum 25 total units of course credit in three areas, a capstone report and presentation, and passing the leadership and technical comprehensive exams.


Technical Electives

  • A minimum of 12 units of 200-level (graduate) Bioengineering courses, taken for a letter grade.
  • Courses may be from any of our 7 technical concentrations, or any Bioengineering graduate courses of interest.

Leadership Courses

  • Engineering Leadership Boot Camp: mid-August (in person & online)
    • ENGIN 270A - Organizational Behavior for Engineers (1 unit)
    • ENGIN 270B - R&D Technology Management & Ethics (1 unit)
  • ENGIN 295 - Communications for Engineering Leaders (1 unit each Fall & Spring)
  • ENGIN 270C - Teaming & Project Management (1 unit Fall)
  • Engineering Leadership Boot Camp: mid-January (in person & online)
    • Two electives (2 units) from Engineering 270 D, G, H, I, J, L, M
  • ENGIN 270K - Coaching for High Performance Teams (1 unit)

Capstone Project

  • ENGIN 296 MA - Capstone Project (2 units Fall)
  • ENGIN 296 MB - Capstone Project (3 units Spring)
  • Capstone team report and presentation

Comprehensive Exams

  • Leadership Exam: The Fung Institute will administer a written exam for the fall leadership portion of the curriculum. Administration will be in person and mandatory.
  • Technical Exam: The Bioengineering Technical Comprehensive Exam will take place late in the Spring semester (generally during RRR week) and will consist of a 20 minute minimum presentation on the capstone project to two faculty members in relevant fields. Students will be asked probing questions during the presentation, and a passing score will be necessary for graduation. Students who do not receive a Pass may re-take the exam in a later semester.
