Program Overview
The Bacharelado em Gestão Ambiental is a 4-year undergraduate program offered by the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (ESALQ) at the University of São Paulo (USP). The program has 40 annual vacancies and is taught in the evening.
Profession
The environmental manager is responsible for maintaining the balance between the conservation of natural resources and the economic production of goods and services. This professional elaborates, develops, and coordinates environmental projects, formulates policies for environmental certification, promotes environmental awareness and education, and conducts environmental impact studies.
Academic Curriculum
The program offers a multidisciplinary education focused on earth and environmental sciences, social sciences, and administration, with disciplines related to administration, economics, sociology, geoprocessing, botany, geology, environmental chemistry, zoology, hydrology, ecology, environmental education, tourism management, environmental and social projects, environmental certification, communication, and marketing, law, and socio-environmental issues. The final project allows students to specialize in an area of their choice and prepare for the job market.
Infrastructure
The ESALQ/USP offers excellent physical and human infrastructure, with a focus on the quality of classrooms and laboratories. The program is taught in the departments of the school, at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA) of the USP in Piracicaba. Students have access to libraries with individual and collective study rooms, internet terminals, and a variety of books on topics related to the area.
Job Market
The environmental manager can work in:
- Private institutions: environmental monitoring, emission of environmental impact reports, implementation of environmental management systems, auditing, and certification.
- Public agencies: municipal, state, and federal sectors related to environmental issues, such as environmental secretariats, IBAMA, and Hydrographic Basin Committees.
- Non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
- Educational and research institutions: teaching, research, and extension activities.
- Environmental consulting.
Additional Information
The program has a strong focus on extension activities, with numerous opportunities for participation in internal or external groups to the USP, as well as international experiences, which provide experiences in areas of preference. The program also has a strong research component, with opportunities for students to participate in research projects and develop their skills in environmental management.
