Program Overview

Introduction to the ZJU-Yale Cooperative Education Program

The ZJU-Yale Cooperative Education Program is a collaborative effort between Zhejiang University and Yale University, aimed at establishing a comprehensive education program for students. According to the agreement between the two institutions, students will receive a BS degree from ZJU and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Yale.

Program Structure

The program entails five years of instruction, divided into two phases:

  • The first three academic years will take place at ZJU, including potential study abroad opportunities that are part of the regular ZJU curriculum.
  • The fourth and fifth years will take place at Yale's School of Public Health.

Degree Requirements

After the successful completion of all ZJU requirements, including all course credits and graduation thesis, students will receive a BS degree from ZJU. Upon successful completion of all requirements at Yale, students will receive an MPH degree from Yale.

Admission Requirements

ZJU students wishing to apply to the program must meet the entrance requirements outlined below:

  • Applicants must be in the top of their student cohort (e.g., the third year class of which they are a member).
  • ZJU students may apply to the program before December 15 of the third year of their academic program at ZJU.
  • Students must notify the registrar at ZJU of their intent to apply to the program.
  • A committee at ZJU will pre-select at most 20 of the most qualified applicants and notify Yale of the intent of those students to apply.

Application Process

Students selected by ZJU will submit applications through the U.S. SOPHAS system for admission to Yale. Students may apply for a concentration in:

  • Biostatistics (BIS)
  • Chronic Disease Epidemiology (CDE)
  • Environmental Health Sciences (EHS)
  • Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (EMD)
  • Health Care Management (HCM)
  • Health Policy (HPM)
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS)

Program Details

  • For those ZJU applicants selected for interviews by Yale, interviews will take place in early January and will be conducted by telephone or Skype.
  • All ZJU applicants will be notified by Yale of the decision on their application (to admit or decline) in February.
  • ZJU students admitted to the program will spend the entire fourth and fifth year of the program in residence at Yale School of Public Health, taking prescribed classes.
  • A total of 20 course units are required for the Yale MPH degree.
  • ZJU students admitted to the program will be permitted by ZJU to complete their fourth academic year of study towards the ZJU BS degree at Yale.
  • Credits earned for courses successfully completed at Yale will be applied toward students' ZJU BS degree at the discretion of, and according to the policies and standards established by, ZJU.

Internship and Fees

  • ZJU students admitted to the program will participate in a public health-related internship during the summer between the end of the fourth academic year and the commencement of the fifth academic year.
  • The internship must be approved by the Yale School of Public Health Office of Public Health Practice.
  • At ZJU, the fees for years 1 through 3 will be the same as those for students of the same majors at ZJU.
  • No extra fees will be charged from students who will take part in this program.
  • When enrolled at Yale during years 4 and 5 of the program, students will pay full tuition and fees at the rate set by Yale and must purchase the medical insurance required by Yale.
