Overview of the EMS Fellowship Program

The EMS Fellowship Program at Yale School of Medicine is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship that offers a comprehensive experience in emergency medical services. With over 20 graduates since 2000, the program provides a faculty appointment at Yale School of Medicine and a range of clinical experiences, including an average of eight 8-hour clinical Emergency Medicine shifts per month at various academic and community sites.

Program Highlights

• Emphasis on operational and academic EMS
• Field response as an EMS physician with a regional team, utilizing two dedicated EMS vehicles
• Training and certification opportunities in EVOC, Hazmat Ops, ICS, Firefighter I & II, and Emergency Medical Dispatcher
• Extensive research opportunities in any area of EMS interest, with potential collaborations with other Yale programs, including public health, surgery, and biomedical engineering
• Mass gathering medicine experience, including coverage of Yale athletics
• Protected and funded travel to the NAEMSP and SAEM annual meetings

EMS in New Haven and Connecticut

The Yale New Haven Health (YNHH) Center for EMS (CEMS) provides medical oversight for over 380 paramedics, 1300 EMTs, 115 first responders, and 275 dispatchers from 27 EMS agencies in the surrounding 12 towns. The EMS services include 15 fire departments, 2 commercial EMS services, 4 police departments, 1 municipal third service, 3 student-based university EMS services, 1 industrial first responder, and the only EMS physician response team in the state.

Eligibility and Application

• Eligibility criteria as outlined by ABEM
• Background and interest in EMS, education, research, and administration
• Must be eligible for an unrestricted Connecticut medical license
• Application process:
  • Uses the NRMP Match
  • Requires a cover letter, Curriculum Vitae (CV), and three letters of recommendation (one from the residency program director)
  • Important dates: Application Deadline (September 8th) and Fellowship Start Date (July 1st)
