Program Overview

Yale Medical Simulation Fellowship in Emergency Medicine

The Yale Medical Simulation Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (EM) is a one-year fellowship offered annually to two qualified EM residency graduates. Fellows learn simulation-based education and scholarship at the Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation (YCHS), a joint venture between Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS). The 13,000 square foot simulation center includes immersive space for hands-on practice as well as didactic classroom environments. YCHS offers simulation education to Yale medical and PA students, residents in all specialties, and nurses at YNHHS. Fellows receive training in simulation curriculum development including scenario design, in situ simulation, interprofessional education, development of debriefing skills, and exposure to procedural simulation training and education.

Training Medical Students

Fellows participate in all aspects of the medical student curriculum, which is the largest simulation program for undergraduate medical students in the United States. Medical students begin their simulation curriculum in the first week of medical school and end with a “night on call” scenario before entering residency.

Training Residents

Fellows lead simulation and debrief sessions for EM residents during a dedicated weekly block. Initially working closely with faculty, fellows gradually gain the autonomy to lead these sessions independently. This progression allows them to develop and refine their own debriefing style, fostering confidence and expertise in simulation-based education.

Research

Research is a central component of the fellowship, with weekly research meetings in the Department of EM’s medical simulation section. Our research interests are in physiologic stress measurements, the impact of AI/AR/VR on learners, and human factors research. Fellows also attend monthly Department of EM research seminars, and present their work at the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.

Collaboration & Innovation

YCHS is a central site for YSM’s advancement in innovative technologies including AI, AR, and VR. Fellows become knowledgeable in using and leveraging these technologies by collaborating with the associate dean for education, technology, and innovation and the school’s Education Technology & Innovation team.

Community Engagement

YCHS is committed to community outreach. Fellows receive funding and participate in the Simulation Academy at Yale—a longitudinal outreach program for local New Haven public high school students funded by a National Institute of General Medical Sciences Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) R25 Grant. Now in its 10th year, the Simulation Academy at Yale, in conjunction with Yale Pathways to Science, exposes students to STEM learning and potential careers in the health care profession.

Mentorship

Leigh Evans, MD, executive director of YCHS, is the overall mentor for the fellowship and assists the fellows in developing their simulation skills.

Compensation, Benefits & Title

Fellows attend as a clinical instructor in the Yale New Haven Hospital Emergency Departments. Fellows receive competitive pay, a CME budget, four weeks of vacation, and the title of “clinical instructor.”
