Program Overview

The Breast Pathology Fellowship at Yale School of Medicine is a one-year program that provides focused training in diagnostic breast surgical pathology. The fellowship benefits from the outstanding clinical material afforded by The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, a National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center recognized for excellence in patient care and outcomes.

Description

The fellowship will consist of specialty surgical pathology sign-out training and involvement in ongoing or novel research projects. During the 12 months of training, the fellow will be involved in the diagnostic assessment of over 3,500 breast specimens.

Educational Objectives

• Competency in the morphologic criteria of benign and malignant processes in all types of breast specimens
• Ability to incorporate molecular and other advanced techniques into the practice of breast pathology
• Ability to make diagnoses and provide differential diagnoses on all types of breast specimens
• Ability to understand the clinical impact of the diagnoses
• Understanding of both the capabilities and the limitations of assessment of a disease process microscopically

Activities

Primary commitment will be given to an active clinical service, with the opportunity to conduct translational research. Fellows are an integral part of patient care at YNHH. They have a major role in Breast Tumor Board and Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation Conference. Fellows assist in the training of first and second year residents in breast pathology, contribute to journal club presentations and have the opportunity to participate in medical school teaching. Translational research participation is encouraged, aiming to contribute to clinically oriented research papers.

Requirements

• Three years of training in anatomic pathology or four years combined anatomic and clinical pathology
• Board certification in anatomic pathology is desirable

Additional Information

The program is accepting applications for the academic year in April/May 2025. The fellow’s education is through assigned responsibilities and supplemented by seminars given by Yale faculty and invited lecturers to the Department of Pathology.
