Introduction to Executive Certificates

The Executive Certificate from MIT Sloan is a formal recognition of professional development and an opportunity to take a deep dive into the topics that matter most to you. These certificate programs, unlike MBAs, don't consist of a prescribed set of courses — an Executive Certificate is a plan of your own design. You earn this credential by completing four courses or 8 Executive Education Units (EEUs), with at least three of those courses coming from one of the tracks we offer: Digital Business; Management and Leadership; Strategy and Innovation; and Technology and Operations.

Requirements for Earning an Executive Certificate

  • At least 3 courses from your chosen track.
  • Plus a 4th course from any track.
  • A combination of all your completed courses must equal or exceed: 8.0 EEUs.
  • At least 6 EEUs must be earned in your selected track.
  • You may attend courses in any of our formats; however, at least one must be In Person or Live Online.
  • You have up to 4 Years to complete the requirements, but you can earn an Executive Certificate in as little as 2 weeks.

How It Works

It's not difficult to enroll in any of the Executive Certificate tracks from MIT Sloan Executive Education. By following a simple, three-step process, you can emerge with a credential that matches your interests and your organization's needs.

Step 1: Enroll in the Executive Certificate(s) of your choice

You can enroll in a track at any time, free of charge. Simply click the "Enroll for Free" button on the executive certificate page and enter your details in the enrollment form. You will still need to select the courses in your plan, but you can do so at a later time.

Step 2: Create a course plan

Choose at least three courses from your selected track. You can select your fourth course from any track. You have up to four years to complete the requirements, but you can earn this executive certificate in as little as two weeks.

Step 3: Complete your courses

All courses must total at least 8 Executive Education Units (EEUs). At least 6 EEUs must be earned in your selected track. Attend at least one in person or live online course. Although self-paced online programs and Business Sprints can count toward the requirements, at least one course must be attended in person or live online.

FAQs

What are the requirements to earn an Executive Certificate?

The only requirements for the Executive Certificate are that you enroll in the track(s) you would like to pursue then apply for, are accepted to, and complete three courses within your chosen track and one additional "elective" program (from any of the three tracks) within a four-year period - must total a minimum of 8 EEUs. At least one of the courses must be attended in person or live online.

How much does an Executive Certificate cost?

The Executive Certificate is designed to meet your individual education needs. You attend four courses: three in your chosen track and one additional program, your "elective". The total cost to you would be the costs of the individual programs you attend. We also offer a Multiple Program Discount.

How much do the courses in an Executive Certificate program cost?

Without considering the impact of the Multiple Program Discount, courses range from under $2,000 for business sprints worth 1 EEU to over $10,000 for extensive in-person courses worth 5 to 10 EEUs. Organizations often provide financial support for executives to take these courses and improve their knowledge.

How long do courses within an Executive Certificate take to complete?

Within the maximum four-year duration of an Executive Certificate program, courses come with different time commitments. Executive Academy courses, which are worth 8-10 EEUs and award Executive Certificates, take 1-3 weeks, while individual courses take 1-3 days or 4-6 days, depending on their scope.

What are EEUs?

We have implemented Executive Education Units (EEUs) as part of Executive Certificate and ACE requirements. Each course has been assigned a number of EEUs which count toward Certificate requirements and replace "Program Days" which did not accurately represent many online courses.

What if I need to miss a day or more of a course or leave early; will I still earn Executive Certificate credit?

In order to receive a program certificate of completion, you must attend the entire program. In addition, if you cannot attend the full course, you will not receive any Executive Certificate or ACE credit for the program. If you find that you cannot attend the full program for which you are registered, we advise to you to defer your enrollment to the next session. Please see our Cancellation and Deferral policies for more information.

What is an ACE?

The Advanced Certificate for Executives, Management, Innovation, and Technology (ACE) is a further credential you can earn after completing individual MIT Sloan Executive Education courses or earning an Executive Certificate. An ACE requires 25 EEUs, while 10 of those EEUs must come from in-person or live online coursework. This certificate does convey MIT Sloan Affiliate Alumni status.

Will I receive MIT Sloan alumni status?

You will not earn MIT Sloan alumni status from completing an Executive Certificate. Participants that earn the Advanced Executive Certificate Program in Management, innovation & Technology (ACE) or complete the Advanced Management Program (AMP) or Executive Program in General Management will benefit from MIT Sloan Affiliate Alumni status, inclusion in the MIT Sloan alumni directory, an MIT Sloan email-forwarding-for-life address, and a subscription to the MIT Sloan alumni enewsletter.
