Program Overview


Introduction to the Computational Science and Engineering PhD

The Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) PhD program is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to specialize at the doctoral level in a computation-related field of their choice through focused coursework and a doctoral thesis. Applications from candidates who have a strong foundation in core disciplinary areas of mathematics, engineering, physics, or related fields are strongly encouraged.

Standardized Tests Instructions

For all applicants:

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for all CSE applicants.

For International applicants:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum score required: 7
  • Electronic scores should be sent to MIT Graduate Admissions.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) is also accepted with a minimum score of 100.

Financial Support

The CCSE PhD is an interdisciplinary program that collaborates with eight affiliated departments. As financial support may vary by department, CCSE graduate students are encouraged to contact their home department for more information.
