Program Overview

The MMSc in Biomedical Informatics program is a full-time, in-person program completed over two academic years (four semesters). In the first year, students complete a series of required and elective courses. In the second year, they undertake their thesis research full-time in the lab of their selected research mentor.

Program Requirements

  • Students must be enrolled in program requirements for 4 full-time academic terms.
  • Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 16 credits each semester.
  • Students must not exceed 20 credits in any semester during the first year without program approval.
  • Students must not enroll in coursework or credits above their 16 thesis research credits in any semester during the second year without program approval.

Year 1 - Fall Semester: 16 credits

Required Courses

  • BMI 701 Foundations of Biomedical Informatics I: 4 credits This introductory course surveys methods in biomedical informatics, including methods and approaches used in clinical informatics, bioinformatics, imaging and population health informatics.
  • BMI 714 Advanced Coding and Statistics for Biomedical Informatics: 4 credits This course teaches students advanced coding and statistics needed to extract, transform and prepare data to work with various biomedical informatics pipelines and analyze the results.
  • BMI 717 Conduct and Communication of Science: 2 credits This course teaches graduate students both important concepts and practical skills needed to perform high-quality biomedical informatics research.

Electives

  • 6 credits Outside of the set of required courses, students will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of available courses to meet the program's elective requirements. Possible elective options in the fall semester include:
    • BMI 706: Data Visualization for Biomedical Applications: 2 credits
    • Any of the pre-approved courses listed on the Program Electives Webpage.

Year 1 - Spring Semester: 16 Credits

Required Courses

  • BMI 702 Foundations of AI in Medicine: 4 credits Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform medicine, offering cutting-edge approaches to address challenges in medical research and practice.
  • BMI 718 Reading, Writing, and Evaluating Scientific Literature: 2 credits This course teaches biomedical informatics graduate students the practical skills needed to use scientific literature in their biomedical informatics research.
  • BMI 719 Design and Execution of Scientific Projects: 2 credits This course teaches graduate students the practical skills to plan and execute a biomedical informatics research project.

Electives

  • 8 credits Outside of the set of required courses, students will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of available courses to meet the program's elective requirements. Possible elective options in the spring semester include:
    • AI In Medical Imaging: 2 credits
    • Single-cell analysis for Functional Genomics of Disease: 2 credits
    • Integrative Analyses for Rare Genetic Disease Diagnostics: 2 credits
    • Biomedical Web Applications with R/Python Shiny: 2 credits
    • Health Information Technology: From Ideation to Innovation: 4 credits
    • Any of the pre-approved courses listed on the Program Electives Webpage.
