Program Overview

The Harvard Graduate School of Education offers various programs for educators and leaders. The School Turnaround Leaders program is a specialized leadership program that brings together individuals and teams who are charged with leading change in their schools and districts.

Program Details

The School Turnaround Leaders program is designed to help participants develop the skills and knowledge needed to create the conditions for rapid and sustained change in their schools. The program focuses on establishing high expectations for instructional quality, developing effective teams, translating data into action, and generating deep engagement among school and community stakeholders.

Program Objectives

Develop a theory of action to achieve rapid, meaningful improvement.
Use data to set strategy, assess progress, and drive decision-making at the classroom and school levels.
Learn how to transform school culture and foster high-quality instruction.
Acquire strategies for communicating your vision to the press and community.

Program Structure

The program is an on-campus institute that takes place over several days. Participants will work with a cohort of fellow school leaders to analyze and refine their school's improvement plan and develop the skills needed for successful implementation.

Faculty Chair

The program is led by Katherine K. Merseth, Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Target Audience

The program is designed for:

Principals, assistant principals, and teacher leaders directly responsible for leading K-12 school turnaround efforts
District administrators, state administrators, and school leaders who oversee school turnaround and innovation efforts

Tuition and Fees

The tuition for the program is $4,250.00, which covers all instructional materials, a daily continental breakfast, and beverages and light refreshments during scheduled breaks. Travel, lodging expenses, and most lunches and dinners are not included in this fee.

Application Process

The program welcomes applications from both individuals and teams. First-time applicants need to create a Professional Education account to apply. Teams should designate a coordinator to submit the team application, and all team members will receive an email notification with a link to their personal application form.
