Program Overview


Environmental Sciences Program

The Environmental Sciences program at the University of Connecticut is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the natural world and the impact of human activities on the environment.


Major Requirements

The major requirements for the Environmental Sciences program include:


  • Basic Science (Natural Sciences) Requirements:
    • BIOL 1107 & BIOL 1108 or BIOL 1110 Principles of Biology I & Principles of Biology II or Botany
    • CHEM 1127Q & 1128Q or CHEM 1124Q, 1125Q, & 1126Q General Chemistry I & II or Fundamentals of Chemistry I, II, & III
    • MATH 1131Q & MATH 1132Q Calculus I & II
    • PHYS 1201Q & 1202Q or PHYS 1401Q & 1402Q General Physics I & II or General Physics with Calculus I & II
    • STAT 1000Q or STAT 1100Q or STAT 3025Q Introduction to Statistics I or Elementary of Concepts of Statistics or Statistical Methods (Calculus Level)
    • NRE 1000 Environmental Science
  • It should be noted that: ARE1150, ECON 1200, or ECON 1201; GEOG 2300; GSCI 1050; MARN 1002 may be pre-requisites for several upper division course concentration options. It is recommended to review pre-requisites in the catalog for concentration courses you may be interested in registering for.

Sophomore Seminar

  • ENVS 2000 Integrating Humans and the Environment

Capstone

  • All ENVS students must pass the following capstone course prior to graduation:
    • NRE 4000W Natural Resources Management and Planning (Spring)

Internship or Research Experience

  • 1 – 6 credits approved by advisor.

Area of Concentration

  • In addition to the courses in groups I – IV, students must take additional courses in a specified concentration. Students are encouraged to declare their concentration prior to entering their fifth semester.
  • Concentration options include:
    • Sustainable Systems
    • Global Change
    • Human Health

The program is offered through the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
