Program Overview
Mold and Moisture Course
The Mold and Moisture Course is designed to provide healthcare providers with guidance on addressing patients with illnesses related to mold in the indoor environment. The course includes a background understanding of how mold may be affecting patients and describes "tools" to help the provider evaluate the patient and explore environmental relationships to illness.
Course Structure
The course is divided into two segments, each taking a maximum of 1.5 hours to complete:
- Health Effects Related to Mold and Moisture in Indoor Environments
- Resources for Health Providers: Preventing Respiratory Disease in Patients who are Exposed to Damp Moldy Environments
Learning Objectives
Health Effects Related to Mold and Moisture in Indoor Environments
Course participants will develop skills to make informed decisions on the need for environmental intervention based on current information on health effects and exposure to mold and moisture.
Resources for Health Providers: Preventing Respiratory Disease in Patients Who are Exposed to Damp Moldy Environments
Course participants will:
- Consider the risk of respiratory illness for patients who encounter mold exposure based on NIH/National Institute of Health and World Health organization reviews
- Be able to access OSHA/Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidance on respiratory protection, the EPA/U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mold clean up guidances and CDC/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention population guidance on mold
- Be able to guide patients/public to resources on health and safety during hurricane response and recovery
